I was looking for VCF Automation Advanced Workload Placement in VCFA Cloud Zones, but wasn't finding it. All screenshots here are from 8.18.x.

The only available Placement Policy options are:

  • DEFAULT

  • BINPACK

  • SPREAD

  • SPREAD BY MEMORY

As indicated by the information bubble at right, here's a description of each.

But there is another Placement Policy called "ADVANCED", which doesn't appear by default. The ADVANCED Placement Policy uses VCF Operations to make recommendations for Workload Placement, specifically Cluster and Datastore Cluster placement in each VCFA Cloud Zone. In order to see it, you must configure the VCF Operations integration from VCFA.

Go to Assembler - Infrastructure - Connections - Integrations

Click ADD INTEGRATION.

Select VMware Aria Operations.

Fill out the form, including the VCF Operations API URL, which is called out in the information bubble for that field. Click VALIDATE to confirm the connection. Once done click ADD.

Now back in your Cloud Zone you will have the ADVANCED Placement Policy option.

My pal Christopher Lewis has a great blog including the details around VCFA Placement Policies, you can find it here. Hope this was helpful, enjoy!
