VMware Aria Operations Credentials
I used to be able to edit adapter instance credentials here, what happened!? I noticed this after upgrading to the latest version, Aria Operations 8.14, so I checked the Release Notes. And sure enough, in the Release Notes, there is a section discussing this. Credential management All credentials need to have a user assigned to it. Credentials which do not have any user assigned will be found in the Orphaned and Unassigned page. For security reasons it is highly recommended

VMware Aria Operations Alert Hygiene
Alerts, so many Alerts! I just logged into my Aria Operations lab, went to the Troubleshoot - Alerts tab and there are thousands of Alerts. Alerts can be super powerful, but they can also be noisy and generate spam if you're making notifications on them, so it's important to maintain proper Alert hygiene. What does that look like? Well, first you'll want to make sure your Alerts are being disposed of properly, which you can confirm via Administration - Global Settings - Dat

VMware Aria Operations Dynamic Thresholding
At its core, VMware Aria Operations is a powerful data analytics engine: consuming data from vSphere, NSX, vSAN, and other non-VMware sources, analyzing that data, and providing feedback to the consumer. Part of analyzing that data is to determine what's normal and what's not, using things like Dynamic Thresholds (DTs) for abnormality monitoring. But, how are these DTs established, let's explore! First, DTs are enabled by default, settings can be found via Administration -

VMware Aria Operations for Integrations October 2023 Release
Last week VMware dropped the 8.14 versions of the products in the Aria Suite: Aria Operations, Aria Operations for Logs, Aria Automation, and Aria Lifecycle Manager. This week we dropped the 9.0 version of the Management Packs included in the Aria Operations for Integrations Suite. The highlight here is that these Management Packs no longer require their own license, but rather consume an Aria Operations license unit, let's take a look. Looking at our Licensing Page before

VMware Aria Operations Business Applications
Business Applications were introduced back in Aria Operations (vRealize Operations) 8.6. They are a container construct for VMs, Hosts, Datastores, Services, Databases, any Aria Operations aware object type, in an effort to collectively define a potential Business Application. Similar to Customer Groups, but more powerful, with the ability to in fact contain Custom Groups. Documentation can be found here, let's explore. Go to Environment - Business Applications - ADD. VMware Aria Operations Management Pack for Aria Automation Orchestrator
This is a follow-up to our previous blog on VMware vRealize Operations Actions. For the purposes of this blog, I am running everything on-prem, and will be attaching the Aria Operations Automation Orchestrator adapter instance to my Aria Automation embedded Orchestrator, but stand-alone instances of Orchestrator and Cloud Extensibility Proxy (CEP) embedded instances of Orchestrator are also supported, documentation here. I picture it like this. I'm running Aria Operations 8.

Notifying Different Groups on the same VMware Aria Alerts
I'm monitoring VM Snapshot Age on all VMs, but I'd like to notify different people on different groups of VMs. In this case, I'd like to notify one group of people for old VM Snapshots on VMs named ABC* and a different group of people for old VM Snapshots on VMs named XYZ*. If I were using Tags, Applications, or Tiers, we could filter on this Criteria and Notify accordingly. But I'm not and I'd like to use the VM hostname as my filter, which isn't available as a filter from

Stopping VMware Aria Operations Alerts
There are two main ways to stop Alerts from being generated in VMware Aria Operations: deactivate them or put objects in maintenance mode. Deactivating them is the easy button, documentation can be found here. One way to do this is from Troubleshoot - Alert - Group by Definition. Highly the Alert Definition - select ACTIONS - Deactivate, then deactivate in all policies or just selected policies. This goes into the relevant Policy/s and deactivates the Alert Definition. O

Injecting Alerts into VMware Aria Operations
VMware Aria Operations has the ability to Alert on almost anything: metrics, properties, events, faults, and more. We can also ingest Alerts from other platforms like Microsoft SCOM, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Solarwinds NPM, and more via Management Packs. But what if we want to send Alerts from some other platform or a script, how do we get them into Aria Operations? The API! Here's how you do it. My first thought was the Alerts endpoint. After exploring these options, t

Aria Operations REST API for ESXi Host Properties
I'd like to capture ESXi Host properties via the Aria Operations REST API, here's how you do it. First, let's confirm Aria Operation has what we want: ESXi Host Serial Numbers. As you can see here, Aria Operations does get what we want, the Enclosure Serial Number. Let's now pull it via the REST API. Go to your Aria Operations Suite-API, mine looks like this: https://vr83-bpeterson.tvs.vmware.com/suite-api Once authenticated, run a GET /api/resources against ResourceKind H

VMware Infrastructure Health Management Pack for VMware Aria Operations
Back in the day, if you wanted to monitor your VMware Software Defined Datacenter with VMware Aria Operations, you'd deploy the SSDC Health Management Pack. With 17 Dashboards, 55 Views, 69 Alerts, and more, it was an effective way to monitor your SDDCs (vCenters, vSAN, and NSX-T). This management pack is still available, but will ultimately be deprecated. In the most recent release of Aria Operations 8.12, we've introduced the VMware Infrastructure Health Management Pack,

VM vCPU and Memory Recommendations from VMware Aria Operations
Rightsizing VMs is a core capability of VMware Aria Operations and has been detailed nicely here by VMware Senior Product Line Manager Brandon Gordon. The Aria Operations rightsizing engine tells us how many vCPU and how much Memory to add or remove to VMs based on past performance and consumption. This can be explored from Optimize - Rightsize. We show Allocated vCPU and Memory and Recommended vCPU and Memory Reductions/Increases, but not the Recommended vCPU or Memory. I

Upgrade VMware Aria Operations 8.10 to 8.12 via the Admin Console
It's been a while since I did one of these, figured I'd share it. In an effort to explore some new management packs included in Aria Operations 8.12, I'm upgrading one of my standalone labs. Meaning, I won't be using Aria Lifecycle to upgrade, let's go! First, let's grab the upgrade PAK and the pre-assessment tool from Customer Connect. VMware Aria Operations Management Pack for NSX Advanced Load Balancer
Back in June 2019 VMware announced it's intent to acquire AVI Networks, a month later and the acquisition was complete. Since then, the AVI Networks Application Delivery Controller (ADC) has been rebranded to be the VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer. As is the case with other VMware Software Defined Data Center components, we built an Aria Operations Management Pack for it, which was announced in August 2022. Let's have a look. VMware Aria Operations 8.12: What's New with Cloud Proxies for Telegraf Agents!
Telegraf Agents are a great way to capture OS-level metrics, monitor services and processes, and gain visibility into Applications. We've discussed many of these things already, but in Aria Operations 8.12 (and Aria Operations SaaS January 2023) we now have HA for data collection from Telegraf Agents, implemented via Collector Groups (CG) and a Virtual IP, let's have a look! Monitoring vSAN with VMware Aria Operations
VMware vSAN monitoring has been available in Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) for quite some time. Originally, as a part of the Management Pack for Storage Devices, then its own implementation called the vSAN Management Pack, it's now included in the platform itself (ever since vROps 6.6). Once you've deployed Aria Operations, you'll notice the following. The vSAN Management Pack contains all of the content: dashboards, views, reports, and more. While the vCent

The Aria Operations SaaS July 2023 release was made IA this past week, a couple things stand out to me: Search enhancements from the Troubleshooting Workbench and Notification Heartbeats.
